Thermal Insulation Software

In the design of thermal processes, multi-layer insulation systems are key to reducing thermal losses and potential safe touch hazards. Our team has designed a simple excel-based software which predicts and calculates the insulation thickness and type required to give the desired performance.

Thermal Wizard Software

As part of our suite of software development tools, we’ve used our expertises in thermal design to help manufacturers and designers to quickly allow evaluation and specification of multi-layer thermal insulation systems. We have designed a bespoke XL tool for an end-user manufacturer of insulation to allow for calculating optimum multi-layered insulation and material selection. Wind speed emissivity and shapes are customisable. What-if-scenarios can be generated for different combination of variables.

Microsoft Excel was requested as the platform to be used, it was to allow the user to input a number of insulation layers at the correct type, thickness and orientation. The user then inputs the conditions: temperature, convection, radiation, etc… From this the programme will calculate the temperature profile across the wall and generate a report for multiple cases so that the optimal design can be found.

Visual Basic was used to write the programme, a finite-difference model was at the core to calculate the thermal profile but to give all the needed functionality; a database for material properties, automatic reporting tool and a Userform Wizard to guide the user were created.

The Heat Wizard and its functionality was built with customer input throughout to create an individual, bespoke tool that suited all their requirements. On any new enquiry or project this software is the first point of call to ensure the correct insulation type and thicknesses are used to get the best costed performance.
