Cylinder in Cross-Flow — Isothermal
Calculates the average convective heat transfer coefficient and total heat rate for a circular cylinder held at a uniform surface temperature in a uniform free-stream cross-flow.
Film Temperature
Fluid properties are evaluated at the film temperature:
Tf=2Ts+T∞Reynolds Number
ReD=νUDNusselt Number
The Hilpert correlation switches constants with Reynolds number:
Nu=CReDnPr1/3| Re range | C | n |
|---|---|---|
| 0.4 – 4 | 0.989 | 0.330 |
| 4 – 40 | 0.911 | 0.385 |
| 40 – 4 000 | 0.683 | 0.466 |
| 4 000 – 40 000 | 0.193 | 0.618 |
| 40 000 – 400 000 | 0.0266 | 0.805 |
Heat Transfer Coefficient and Heat Rate
h=DNu⋅k Q=h⋅(πDLc)⋅(Ts−T∞)Validity
- Reynolds number: 0.4 – 400 000
- Prandtl number: 0.6 – 50 (gases and light liquids)
- Not suitable for liquid metals (Pr ≪ 1) or heavy oils (Pr ≫ 50)
