Date-lapsed stock is the one pharmaceutical waste stream that arrives on a schedule. Every month a quarantine cage fills with tablets, ampoules, creams and part-used packs that cannot be sold, cannot be returned and cannot go into the general stream. A LitBurn destroys them where they were quarantined, at the permitted condition, with the run recorded against the batch numbers that went in.

Medicinal waste codes on the permit

Medicines other than cytotoxic and cytostatic fall under 18 01 09 from healthcare sources or 20 01 32 from municipal ones. Both have to be named at permit application — a permit written for general waste does not cover the quarantine cage.

1,100°C where blisters push past 1% halogenated

PVC and PVdC blister films count towards the 1% halogenated organic threshold that raises the secondary chamber minimum to 1,100°C. A blister-heavy stream should declare the higher condition rather than assume the 850°C baseline.

Segregation stays a pharmacy duty

Controlled drugs, cytotoxics and pressurised inhalers each have their own route. On-site incineration removes the collection dependency, not the classification discipline that decides what may enter a general charge.

Records close the write-off

One run, one manifest, one temperature log, one ash weight. Together they are the certificate of destruction, and they should reconcile against the stock system entry that wrote the batch off in the first place.

Quarantine is a cost, not a store

Stock waiting for a destruction collection occupies secure floor space, stays on the stock system as a liability and has to be counted at every audit. Destroying it on the day it is written off closes the line instead of moving it to a different cage.

The record follows the batch number

A reconciled manifest, a temperature log and an ash weight tie the destruction to the batch that was written off. A contractor's certificate ties it to a consignment note, which is a weaker link and one you did not witness.

Diversion risk ends at the charge door

Date-lapsed does not mean worthless — expired stock has a resale market, and every transfer is an opportunity for it to reach one. Destruction on site removes the transfer entirely rather than papering over it with a certificate.

Packaging goes in with the product

Blisters, bottles, cartons and patient information leaflets are charged with the dose form rather than separated first. One waste stream instead of three, and no handling step where loose product is exposed.

Coretex refractory lining

Write off and reconcile

Stock is moved to quarantine and reconciled against the batch record before anything is destroyed. What is counted here becomes the destruction manifest — the reconciliation is the audit trail, not paperwork that follows it.

Charge intact packs

Cages and bins are wheeled to the front dual door at floor level and charged without de-blistering, decanting or opening. The most exposed step in medicines destruction is removed rather than made safer.

Burn at 850–1,200°C

Primary combustion destroys the dose form, the excipient matrix and the packaging around it. Continuous duty means the unit is fed while running rather than sealed for a cycle, so a month's write-off clears in hours of operation.

Secondary retention

Gases are held above 850°C for two seconds — 1,100°C where a blister-heavy charge carries more than 1% halogenated organic content. This is what destroys the active molecule rather than volatilising it up the stack.

Ash-out and certify

Residue is 3–5% mineral ash plus inert foil, with no recoverable dose form. The manifest, the temperature log and the ash weight close the destruction record for the batch.

  • Controlled drugs that have not been denatured and witnessedSchedule 2 drugs require denaturing and a witness authorised under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001 before disposal. Incineration is the step after that, never instead of it.
  • Cytotoxic and cytostatic medicines in a general chargeHazardous under 18 01 08* with their own permitted scope and segregation. Route them as cytotoxic waste rather than letting them ride along in a general expired-stock charge.

  • Bulk liquid solvent and reagentA waste incinerator of this class is not a liquid injection plant. Bulk solvent goes to a licensed hazardous liquids route; absorbed residues on wipes are a different question and belong to the laboratory stream.

Can you legally burn expired & date-lapsed medicines on site?

Technically, yes: the chamber destroys almost everything on the accepted list at 850–1,200°C, and capability is rarely the constraint. Legally is a separate question. What your site is allowed to burn is set by your environmental permit from the Environment Agency, SEPA or NIEA and the waste codes written into it. The never-charged list is different again: those materials are out of scope for the unit or governed by a direction, and no permit wording brings them back in. Fewer, longer runs are more fuel-efficient than repeatedly heating the refractory from cold, so batching a month of write-off into one run is the sensible pattern.
