Larder waste is an animal by-product

Material brought back to a building and processed there falls under the retained ABP Regulation and needs an APHA-approved destination. That is a different question from what may lawfully be left at the point of shooting.

APHA approval and environmental permit

The plant needs APHA approval alongside an environmental permit from the Environment Agency, SEPA or NIEA. Remoteness does not create an exemption from either.

Disease surveillance comes first

Deer are a TB host and game birds sit inside avian influenza surveillance. Where disease is suspected, report before destroying — the carcass is the sample.

Lead-shot game must not be fed on

Shot game unfit for the food chain must not be fed to dogs or other animals because of the lead burden. Destruction is the correct route, and this is a genuinely common estate error.

Nothing left out to draw predators

An estate spends the season managing foxes and corvids around release pens. A carcass store is the opposite of that work — it feeds the population you are controlling, in the place you least want it.

No collection round comes here

Estates sit where rounds do not pass. A bin at the end of a track that gets emptied when someone is in the area is not a disposal plan, it is a delay with a smell.

Larder waste has a required route

Material brought back to a building is an animal by-product with a defined destination, and a larder that also handles food-chain carcasses cannot be casual about it.

Rearing losses cleared daily

Poult mortality behaves like poultry mortality: steady, predictable and worst near young birds. A daily cycle through the rearing season keeps the pens clear.

Top-loading charge door

Carcasses are dead weight and awkward to handle. Top loading means a carcass goes in from above with a hoist, loader or teleporter rather than being dragged through a door at chest height, which is the difference between a two-person job and a one-person one.

IP6X control panel

PLC control with cycle logging and chamber thermocouples. The cycle log is the record that a fallen-stock disposal, an APHA-directed cull or an individual pet cremation actually happened, and when.

Coretex refractory lining

Monolithic castable lining rated for the full temperature range, replaceable in service. Wet, fatty loads are the hardest duty a refractory sees, which makes lining quality the thing that decides service life on this stream rather than on any other.

Stack, dispersion data and commissioning

Stack supplied to the height your site-specific dispersion assessment calls for, with the emissions data the permit application references, plus on-site commissioning and operator training. On a livestock unit the neighbours are the reason the assessment matters.

Separate what stays in the field

The gralloch left at the point of shooting and the larder waste brought back to a building are different things with different rules. Establish which is which before anything is moved or charged.

Clear the larder on the day

Trimmings, heads, feet, skins and offal go to the unit the same day rather than sitting in a building that also handles food-chain carcasses.

Load from above

Larder bins and poult crates tip in from above. Larder waste is wet and heavy; a red deer carcass condemned whole may approach the charge rating, so check the animal against the model.

Burn and hold

Primary combustion at 850–1,200°C with two seconds above 850°C in the secondary chamber. Skins and heads take longer than soft offal, so a mixed larder charge runs more evenly than a load of one thing.

Ash out and record

3–5% sterile ash. Log against the larder record and the rearing mortality book, which are records the estate keeps anyway.

  • Dead wild birds found on the groundWaterfowl and raptors found dead are an avian influenza surveillance signal, not a tidy-up task. Report them; burning one destroys the sample that would have been tested.
  • Lead-shot carcasses fed to other animalsNot an incinerator exclusion but the mistake next door to it: shot game unfit for the chain must not be fed to dogs or other animals because of the lead. Destruction is the route, not the kennel.
  • Whole mature red deer above the charge ratingA capacity limit. A large stag can exceed 300 kg, in which case the carcass needs an approved collector rather than a longer cycle.
  • Cartridge cases, wads and shooting debrisPlastic wads and metal cases do not combust usefully, leave residue in the ash and can carry halogenated content. They are a litter-picking job, not a charge.
  • Feed sacks, netting and pen materialsPolymer netting and woven sacks melt rather than burn and foul the chamber. They have collection routes.

Can you legally burn game farms & estates on site?

Technically, yes: the chamber destroys almost everything on the accepted list at 850–1,200°C, and capability is rarely the constraint. Legally is a separate question. What your site is allowed to burn is set by your environmental permit from the Environment Agency, SEPA or NIEA and the waste codes written into it, plus APHA approval, because animal by-products are regulated under their own rules. The never-charged list is different again: those materials are out of scope for the unit or governed by a direction, and no permit wording brings them back in. The game farm side produces rearing mortality: poults lost in the brooder and release pens, birds taken by predators inside the pen, and the losses that come with moving stock. It runs through spring and summer and behaves much like poultry mortality — steady, predictable, and unpleasant if allowed to accumulate near young birds. The deer side produces larder waste through the season: the trimmings, heads, feet, skins and offal that come off a carcass in the larder, plus animals condemned as unfit at inspection. A larder handling several beasts a week produces a consistent volume of material that cannot simply be left about, particularly at a site that also handles carcasses destined for the food chain. What is lawfully left in the field is a genuine and separate question. The gralloch — the offal removed at the point of shooting — is customarily left on the hill in a way that larder waste is not, and the rules on it depend on where you are and what the material is. Larder waste brought back to a building is unambiguously an animal by-product with a required route, and treating one as the other is where estates get into difficulty. Distance is the operational driver. Estates are, by definition, in places collection rounds do not naturally pass, and a carcass bin at the end of a track is a magnet for foxes, corvids, badgers and dogs.
