It is mixed, wet, variable and worth nothing, and it leaves in containers on a round that someone else schedules. A council depot handles the fraction nobody else wants: black bin residual, street sweepings, litter bin contents and bulky waste that will not go to reuse. It is heavy, dirty and priced by the tonne at a gate that gets more expensive every year. Destroying it at the depot removes the haul as well as the tonnage.

Municipal & council waste in full

Adds 20 03 01, 20 03 03 and 20 03 07 to the permit, and one operational fact the other children do not carry: street sweepings bring grit and glass, so residue runs above the usual 3–5%.

Separate collection comes first

Dry recyclables and food waste must be collected separately from residual waste under the recycling rules now in force for workplaces and households. A unit is specified for what remains after that, and the separation is what makes the remaining stream defensible rather than merely convenient.

The permit names the residual codes

Mixed municipal waste is 20 03 01, street cleansing residues 20 03 03, bulky waste 20 03 07, packaging 15 01, and residues from mechanical treatment 19 12 12. Commercial waste of a household nature codes the same way. Name what you will actually burn at permit application.

Batteries and pressurised items are a fire risk, not a nuisance

Lithium cells, vapes, aerosols and gas canisters in a mixed charge are the most common cause of fire in waste handling generally. They are removed before charging as a written step, and they carry their own recovery obligations under battery and WEEE rules.

Catering waste has its own regime

Food and catering waste is animal by-product material. Domestic catering waste has separate-collection and treatment rules; catering waste from international transport is Category 1 and must be destroyed under APHA-approved arrangements. Neither is an ordinary residual charge.

Dual-chamber unit, continuous duty

Primary chamber running 850–1,200°C with a secondary holding flue gas above 850°C for two seconds. Rated to run for a shift, because mixed waste arrives at the rate a site produces it rather than in charges somebody can schedule.

Front dual-door loading

Charged through a front dual door at floor level, so 1,100-litre bins, cages and wheeled containers are fed at the height they are already moved at. No tipping platform, no hoist, no lifting sacks over a rim.

IP6X control panel with cycle logging

PLC control with chamber thermocouples, interlocked charge door and a time-stamped temperature record per run. On a residual stream the log is what a permit compliance visit reads, and what a duty-of-care question is answered from.

Three-burner set and fuel train

Configured for natural gas, LPG, diesel, biofuel or hydrogen. Mixed municipal and commercial waste is wetter and more variable than an industrial stream, so burner support matters more here than on a polymer charge.

Coretex refractory lining

Monolithic castable lining rated for the full temperature range, replaceable in service. Mixed waste swings in calorific value between one bin and the next, and the lining is specified for that cycling rather than for a steady feed.

Stack, dispersion data and commissioning

Stack to the height your site-specific dispersion assessment calls for, the emissions data pack the permit application references, on-site commissioning, a witnessed first run and operator training for depot or site staff.

Separate what the rules require

Dry recyclables and food waste are separately collected under the workplace and household recycling rules now in force. What remains after that is the residual fraction, and it is the only thing this unit is for.

Pull the things that must never be charged

Batteries, vapes, gas canisters, aerosols and electrical items are removed at the bin or at the tipping floor. Lithium cells are the most common cause of fire in a mixed waste stream and the reason this step is written down.

Charge from the containers you already use

Wheeled bins, cages and sacks go through the front dual door at floor level while the unit runs. Mixed waste is not pre-sorted at the door — the sorting decision was made upstream or it was not made at all.

Primary and secondary combustion

Primary at 850–1,200°C with gas held above 850°C for two seconds in the secondary, or 1,100°C where the charge carries more than 1% halogenated organic content. Mixed plastics are the reason a residual stream sometimes does.

Ash-out and record

Residue is 3–5% of input mass for a typical residual charge, higher where the waste carries grit, glass or masonry. The run log and the ash weight are what the site's own waste return and its permit records are written from.

Can you legally burn general waste waste on site?

Technically, yes: the chamber destroys almost everything these streams produce at 850–1,200°C, and capability is rarely the constraint. What your site is allowed to burn is set by your environmental permit from the Environment Agency, SEPA or NIEA and the waste codes written into it, plus APHA approval, because animal by-products are regulated under their own rules. Throughput is the limit, not capability

These are continuous-duty units, so throughput is a function of operating hours rather than cycles. Where a site runs several of these streams through one unit, size on the combined arisings rather than on whichever stream prompted the enquiry.

Sizing, in one line

Hours = arisings ÷ burn rate. Ash = 3–5% of what went in. Check the chamber volume as well as the rate: bulky loads fill the box first, dense ones reach the rating first.

Answered against the published figures for the LitBurn range, not a generic sheet.

A general waste incinerator is a dual-chamber unit specified for residual mixed waste: municipal and commercial refuse, hospitality waste, remote site and camp waste, and the non-recoverable fraction from construction. It handles the stream that recycling, composting and anaerobic digestion have already been given first refusal on. That sequence is not optional any more. Workplace and household separate-collection rules now require dry recyclables and food waste to be collected apart from residual waste, so the honest description of this stream is narrower than it was five years ago — and correspondingly harder for anyone to argue should have been recycled instead. What is left is genuinely mixed, contaminated and low-value. The combustion condition is the Industrial Emissions Directive one: 850°C to 1,200°C in the primary chamber, flue gas above 850°C for two seconds in the secondary, rising to 1,100°C where the waste carries more than 1% halogenated organic content. Mixed plastics in a residual bin are what occasionally take it there. The LitBurn LBI range covers 125, 250, 375 and 500 kg/h as continuous-duty units, front-loaded at floor level from the bins a site already uses. Six general waste streams are specified separately below because the case for a unit differs completely between them: a shopping centre is doing arithmetic on gate fees, an island depot has no round to rely on, and an airport handling international catering waste has a legal requirement to destroy it.

With an environmental permit, yes — and with the separate collection of dry recyclables and food waste done first, because that is now a legal requirement rather than good practice. What may be burned is the residual fraction that remains, with its waste codes named in the permit application.

When the round is long, unreliable or absent, or when the gate fee and Landfill Tax on the tonnage are large enough to carry the fuel, the operator time and the permit. Remote sites and islands are the clearest case because there is often no round at all; a city-centre retail park is an arithmetic question we are happy to do honestly.

No, and the distinction matters legally. Open burning of waste is generally unlawful for businesses and heavily restricted elsewhere. A permitted dual-chamber incinerator holds flue gas above 850°C for two seconds in a secondary chamber, which is the condition that destroys the organic fraction instead of dispersing it.

Size on hours and then check volume. Divide weekly residual arisings by the burn rate for the run time, then count containers against the chamber: uncompacted mixed waste fills a 3.3 m³ chamber long before it reaches 125 kg. Sites that skip the second check buy one size too small.

Batteries and vapes, gas canisters and aerosols, electrical items, tyres, asbestos, plasterboard and anything radioactive. Lithium cells are the practical one: they arrive in mixed waste constantly and they are the usual cause of fires in the sector, which is why removing them is a written step rather than an assumption.

3–5% of input mass for a typical residual charge, and more where the stream carries grit, glass or masonry — street sweepings and construction waste both sit above the range. Only that fraction still leaves the site, under a transfer note.

It should not. Food waste is separately collected and has treatment routes — anaerobic digestion and composting — that rank above disposal, and it is animal by-product material with its own rules. The exception is catering waste from international transport, which is Category 1 and must be destroyed under APHA-approved arrangements.

It is usually a better proposition on industrial waste than on residual mixed waste, which is wetter and more variable. At the LBI-375 and LBI-500 sizes it is still worth assessing for space or process heating, particularly on a remote site already burning fuel to make heat some other way.
