Infectious laboratory waste codes as 18 01 03*; waste carrying hazardous chemicals or fixatives is 18 01 06*. Both belong in the permit application if both are produced, and the second one is the line that is most often forgotten on a hospital application.

Containment rules sit upstream

What may leave a laboratory, and in what state, is decided by the containment level and the local biological safety arrangements. The unit is the disposal step after that decision — it does not license material out of a room it may not leave.

Declare the halogenated condition

Laboratory plastics and packaging can push a run past 1% halogenated organic content, which sets the secondary chamber minimum at 1,100°C. Where laboratory waste shares a unit with a PVC-heavy clinical stream, declare the higher condition once and be done.

Confidentiality is not a waste control

Patient-identifiable labels and request forms are destroyed with the specimen, and that is a real benefit — but the waste classification is decided by hazard, not by sensitivity. Both requirements have to be satisfied, and only one of them is the permit's business.

Small volumes are the worst ones to consign

A few boxes a week is too little to interest a haulier and too much to hold. It is the stream where collection charges are worst per kilogram and where a missed pickup has the most disproportionate effect on a working laboratory.

Cultures are destroyed the same day they are finished with

Plates and broths sitting in a store are a growing population in a box. Destroying them on the day the work closes removes the hold entirely rather than managing it with a fridge and a schedule.

Specimens never leave the building

Patient-identifiable material on tubes, pots and request forms stops being a confidentiality question the moment it stops travelling. Destruction in-house closes that exposure alongside the clinical one.

Mixed plastic and glass go in one route

Pots, tubes, tips and slides do not separate usefully and are not recyclable once contaminated. One permitted route for the whole bench output is simpler than three partial ones.

Configured for natural gas, LPG, diesel, biofuel or hydrogen, with three burners across the LBI range. Fuel choice is a site decision; the combustion condition is identical whichever is specified. Wet loads — anatomical waste, suction liners, fluid-heavy dressings — draw more burner time, not a different machine.

Coretex refractory lining

Monolithic castable lining rated for the full temperature range and for sustained running at the top of it. Replaceable in service rather than requiring the shell to be scrapped with it, which matters on a unit running shifts against a daily arisings curve rather than single burns.

Stack, dispersion data and commissioning

Stack supplied to the height your site-specific dispersion assessment calls for — hospital sites usually carry the tightest one on this list, with wards, intakes and neighbours all inside the assessment — plus the emissions data pack the permit application references, on-site commissioning, a witnessed first run and operator training.

Adds 18 01 03* for infectious laboratory waste and 18 01 06* where hazardous chemicals or fixatives are present. Containment-level inactivation at the bench stays a laboratory duty — the unit is downstream of it, never instead of it.

Inactivate where the containment level requires it

Cultures that must be autoclaved before leaving the laboratory are autoclaved before leaving the laboratory. The incinerator is the disposal step after containment, and the containment rules are the laboratory's to apply.

Segregate chemical from infectious

Formalin, xylene, solvent-bearing residues and fixed specimens are a chemical question under 18 01 06*, not an infectious one. What may go in the charge is decided at the bench, where the person who knows what is in it is standing.

Container closed, container charged

Rigid bins and sealed boxes go through the front dual door as they are. Nothing is decanted, and no bag is opened to confirm what was written on it.

Burn at the declared condition

Primary at 850–1,200°C with two-second secondary retention above 850°C, or 1,100°C where the run carries more than 1% halogenated organic content — laboratory plastics push a charge towards that line more often than bagged ward waste does.

Ash-out and record

Residue is 3–5% mineral ash with an inert glass and metal fraction from slides, tubes and tips. The run log and the container count close the record for the department.

Not a permit question — these stay out

  • Bulk solvents, xylene and formalinA waste incinerator of this class is not a liquid injection plant. Bulk chemical goes to a licensed hazardous liquids route; only absorbed or containerised residues within the agreed scope are a question for the charge.
  • Hazard Group 4 and Category A materialThe highest containment groups have their own inactivation and disposal regime under the containment level that holds them. That material does not cross a yard to reach a waste unit.
  • Radioactive tracers and labelled wasteAnything bearing radionuclides from nuclear medicine or labelled assay work is controlled under radioactive substances legislation, decayed or disposed of under that regime rather than in a clinical charge.
  • Cytotoxic-contaminated laboratory wasteWhere cytotoxic drugs are handled in the laboratory, that waste is 18 01 08* hazardous with its own permitted scope. It routes as cytotoxic waste on the pharmaceutical sector, not as general laboratory waste.

Can you legally burn laboratory & pathology waste on site?

Technically, yes: the chamber destroys almost everything on the accepted list at 850–1,200°C, and capability is rarely the constraint. Legally is a separate question. What your site is allowed to burn is set by your environmental permit from the Environment Agency, SEPA or NIEA and the waste codes written into it. The never-charged list is different again: those materials are out of scope for the unit or governed by a direction, and no permit wording brings them back in. Hospital laboratory waste is what diagnostic work leaves behind: microbiology cultures and plates, specimen containers, blood and serum tubes, swabs and transport media, pipette tips, plastics and the disposable consumables that carried any of it. Most of it is infectious under 18 01 03*; some carries hazardous chemicals or fixatives and codes as 18 01 06*, and the difference decides the route. This is a diagnostic stream rather than a research one. Pharmaceutical R&D laboratory waste — medicinal residues, chemical synthesis, formulation work — is specified separately on the pharmaceutical sector, because its exclusions and its permit lines are different even where the machine is the same. The unit sits downstream of the laboratory's own containment controls, never in place of them. Where the containment level or the local rules require cultures to be inactivated at the bench before leaving the laboratory, that step happens first — an incinerator in the yard does not change what may leave a Containment Level 3 room, and material at the highest hazard groups does not travel this route at all. The volumes are small. A hospital pathology department might produce a couple of hundred kilograms a week, which is under two hours on the smallest LitBurn. That is the honest reason this stream almost never buys a machine by itself — it rides on the unit the infectious stream justified, with its own codes named in the same permit.
