A highly localized form of corrosion that creates small, deep cavities or "pits" in metal surfaces, often caused by dissolved oxygen in boiler feedwater. It is particularly dangerous because it can rapidly penetrate tube walls, causing sudden structural failures while leaving the surrounding surface relatively undamaged.
